Entry #21

2013 Fashion Design Challenge
Entry #21

Alisha's Creations

The outfit I am making is a nautical themed outfit that is perfect for summer. It is an outfit that I would wear myself if I could.

The shirt will be made from white and black polka dot knit fabric and will have ruched raglan style sleeves. It is inspired by a polka dot shirt with ruched raglan sleeves that I bought from Forever 21. I love the ruched sleeves that I’ve seen on a lot of shirts lately, but I haven’t really seen any shirts made for dolls with this type of sleeve, so I want to attempt making one of these shirts myself.

The skirt I am making is inspired by a photo of a skirt that I found on Pinterest (as seen in my photo collage). The skirt will be a full circle skirt with a waistband and will be made from dark navy blue cotton. It will have two pockets with white trim made from cotton. The pockets will also feature white embroidered anchor designs and navy buttons. The bottom of the skirt will be trimmed with two rows of white ribbon.

The accessories I would like to make include a red headband with a bow, a red belt, red shoes, a silver necklace with an anchor pendant, silver sailboat earrings, and some bracelets that match the outfit.

Here is the description for my finished outfit as well as some of the photos.

My finished outfit includes a shirt, a skirt, a headband, a belt, earrings, a necklace, a pair of espadrille shoes, and six bracelets.

To make the shirt, I started out with Liberty Jane’s free trendy T-Shirt pattern as the base to get the right fit for the lower half of the shirt. I then redesigned the top half of the shirt to have raglan style sleeves with ruching and a different neckline. I drafted and redrafted the pattern pieces several times and made a few mock-up shirts before I got the fit of the shirt and the style of the sleeves just right. The finished shirt is made from a white and black polka dot knit fabric. It has a round neckline with a band and raglan sleeves with ruching. It closes in the back with Velcro.

The finished skirt is a full circle skirt with a waistband made from dark navy blue cotton. I made the pattern myself. The skirt features two working pockets with white trim at the tops made from cotton fabric. I hand embroidered white anchors on the pockets and sewed little navy buttons onto the white trimmed tops. I also sewed two rows of white grosgrain ribbon trim around the bottom of the skirt. The skirt has elastic in the back part of the waistband so that it can stretch to fit both Pleasant Company and Mattel American Girl dolls.

The headband was made from red cotton. It features a bow made from the same fabric and it has elastic in the back so it can stretch around the head. I came up with the design myself.

The earrings were made to fit over the posts that come with American Girl dolls that have pierced ears and feature silver metal sailboat charms hanging from silver jump rings attached to links I made with clear, silver lined seed beads in the middle of the links.

The necklace features a silver metal anchor charm attached to a silver metal chain that closes in the back with a clasp.

The six bracelets include three white glass pearl bead bracelets, a red glass bead bracelet with flecks of black in the beads, a bluish glass seed bead bracelet, and a silver metal chain bracelet.

The belt was made from the same red cotton as the headband and features a square silver belt buckle. It is my own design.

The espadrille shoes were made using Eden Ava Couture’s Espadrilles shoe pattern (slightly modified). The main parts of the shoes were made using the same red cotton as the headband and the belt. The shoes feature hand embroidered white anchors on the fronts of the shoes, tan trim around the bottom of the shoes, and cork soles on the bottom.

Well done. Our dolls would wear this! Like the theme, the sleeve, the circle skirt, the shoes, anchors. The only thing I would change would be using a navy dot instead of black. I like the red white and blue color scheme. She really likes jewelry, doesn't she? A lot of jewelry for a little girl. :-) Mine is #2.
